Virtua Fighter's Return: A Glimpse into the Future

Sega has unveiled new in-engine footage of the upcoming Virtua Fighter game, marking the franchise's highly anticipated return after nearly two decades of dormancy. Developed by Sega's own Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, the footage offers a sneak peek at the game's visual direction and combat style.

The last major Virtua Fighter release was the 2021 remaster, Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown, which is slated for a Steam release in January 2025. This new installment, however, promises a completely fresh experience.

First shown at NVIDIA's 2025 CES keynote, the footage, while impeccably choreographed, is not actual gameplay. It's a cinematic presentation showcasing in-engine graphics, providing a strong indication of the game's visual fidelity. The style appears to blend elements of Tekken 8 and Street Fighter 6, moving away from the franchise's classic polygonal aesthetic towards a more realistic representation of characters. The footage features Akira, the series' iconic protagonist, in two new outfits, a departure from his traditional look.

Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, known for the Yakuza series and also involved in the Virtua Fighter 5 remaster, is leading development on this new title alongside Sega's announced Project Century. While details remain scarce, director Riichirou Yamada's previous comments hint at a significant shift in the game's direction. Nevertheless, Sega's commitment to revitalizing the Virtua Fighter brand is evident, as expressed by Sega President and COO Shuji Utsumi in the VF Direct 2024 livestream: "Virtua Fighter is finally back!" The release of this new entry promises to make the 2020s a significant era for fighting game enthusiasts.
