EA’s Executive Vice President Vince Zampella recently provided an update on the current status of the Need for Speed series. Following the release of NFS Unbound over two years ago, EA has not made any new announcements regarding the franchise. This pause is due to Criterion Games, the studio behind Need for Speed, currently dedicating its efforts to the development of the next Battlefield game.
According to Zampella, EA's primary focus is on the new Battlefield project, which is being developed with substantial consideration of player feedback. The development involves collaboration across four different studios, indicating EA's full commitment to this endeavor. Zampella has emphasized that the team is keen on avoiding the pitfalls experienced with Battlefield 2042, which faced significant criticism at launch due to its gameplay choices. This player-centric approach is also being applied to new content for NFS Unbound.
It appears that EA will only revisit Need for Speed after the launch and initial support phase of the new Battlefield game. This delay might benefit the franchise, as fans have expressed dissatisfaction with recent NFS titles. Taking time to listen to player feedback and allowing nostalgia to rebuild could be a strategic move for a successful reboot of the series.
Therefore, fans should not anticipate any new Need for Speed announcements in the near future.
