"Street Fighter Movie Gets New Director"

by Violet Mar 25,2025

A new Street Fighter movie is gearing up to hit the big screen, and it's got a director who's ready to throw down. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Kitao Sakurai, the creative force behind the wildly funny Eric Andre Show, has been chosen to direct this upcoming adaptation for Legendary Entertainment. With a release date already set for March 20, 2026, Capcom is deeply involved in ensuring that the essence of Street Fighter is captured on film.

This isn't the first time Street Fighter has ventured into cinema. Who could forget the iconic 1994 film featuring Jean-Claude Van Damme as Guile, Ming-Na Wen as Chun-Li, and the unforgettable Raul Julia as M. Bison? While critics may have been harsh back then, it's become a cult classic for many fans.

As of now, casting details remain under wraps, but fans can look forward to seeing their favorite Street Fighter characters come to life once again. Initially, the film was set to be directed by Danny and Michael Philippou, known for their work on Talk to Me, but they left the project last summer. The shift to Sakurai, with his background in absurdist comedy, suggests that Legendary might be aiming for a more unconventional take on the beloved franchise. As someone who appreciates the cartoonish aspects of Street Fighter, I'm thrilled at the potential for this new direction.

While we wait for more news on the movie, fans can dive into the latest Street Fighter game, Street Fighter 6, which just introduced Mai Shiranui as its newest fighter. For more on the game, check out our comprehensive Street Fighter 6 review here.
