SwitchArcade Exclusive: Top 10 GBA & NDS Gems on Switch

by Lily Jan 24,2025

A curated selection of retro Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS titles available on the Nintendo Switch eShop. While Nintendo Switch Online boasts a substantial Game Boy Advance library, this list focuses on titles independently released on the eShop. We've chosen ten favorites: four Game Boy Advance and six Nintendo DS gems.

Game Boy Advance

Steel Empire (2004) – Over Horizon X Steel Empire ($14.99)

Kicking things off with a classic shoot 'em up, Steel Empire. While the Genesis/Mega Drive original holds a special place, this GBA version offers a compelling alternative. A worthwhile comparison, and a more streamlined experience in some aspects. Steel Empire is enjoyable regardless of your platform preference, even appealing to those who aren't typically drawn to shooters.

Mega Man Zero – Mega Man Zero/ZX Legacy Collection ($29.99)

As the Mega Man X series faltered on home consoles, the Mega Man Zero series emerged on the GBA. This side-scrolling action game, the first in an excellent series, might have some initial rough edges, but these are polished in later installments. Start here and explore the series' evolution.

Mega Man Battle Network – Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection ($59.99)

A second Mega Man entry, justified by its distinct gameplay from Mega Man Zero. This RPG features a unique battle system blending action and strategy. The virtual world concept is cleverly executed. While later installments show diminishing returns, the original offers substantial enjoyment.

Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow – Castlevania Advance Collection ($19.99)

The Castlevania Advance Collection is a must-have, but Aria of Sorrow stands out. For many, it's even preferred over the acclaimed Symphony of the Night. The soul-collecting system encourages exploration, and the gameplay is highly addictive. A unique setting and hidden secrets add to its appeal. A top-tier GBA title.

Nintendo DS

Shantae: Risky’s Revenge – Director’s Cut ($9.99)

Initially a cult classic with limited distribution, Shantae: Risky’s Revenge gained wider recognition on DSiWare. This title launched Shantae's continued success across multiple consoles. Interestingly, its origins trace back to an unreleased GBA game, which is slated for release soon.

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy ($29.99)

Arguably a GBA title due to its origins, though initially unlocalized. Ace Attorney combines investigation and courtroom drama with humorous storytelling. The first game sets a high bar, though later installments are also highly regarded.

Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective ($29.99)

From the creator of Ace Attorney, Ghost Trick boasts equally strong writing and unique gameplay. As a ghost, you manipulate objects to save others while uncovering the mystery of your death. A captivating and often overlooked Nintendo DS title.

The World Ends With You: Final Remix ($49.99)

A top-tier Nintendo DS game, best experienced on its original hardware. However, the Switch version provides a viable alternative for those without access to a DS. A truly exceptional title in every aspect.

Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow – Castlevania Dominus Collection ($24.99)

The recently released Castlevania Dominus Collection includes all three Nintendo DS Castlevania games. While all are excellent, Dawn of Sorrow benefits significantly from the Switch's button controls replacing the original's touch controls. Play all three for the complete experience.

Etrian Odyssey III HD – Etrian Odyssey Origins Collection ($79.99)

A franchise that thrives on the DS/3DS ecosystem, but this Switch port is surprisingly playable. Each Etrian Odyssey game is a substantial RPG. Etrian Odyssey III, the largest of the three, is a rewarding, albeit challenging, experience.
