Sydney Sweeney to Star in 'Split Fiction' Film Adaptation

by Aurora May 28,2025

Sydney Sweeney, known for her role in Madame Web, is set to star in the upcoming film adaptation of the hit video game Split Fiction. The project, spearheaded by video game adaptation specialists Story Kitchen—who are behind the successful Sonic films—is beginning to take shape under the direction of Jon M. Chu, acclaimed for his work on Wicked. The screenplay is being penned by the dynamic duo Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, known for their work on Deadpool & Wolverine. Story Kitchen is currently presenting this talented ensemble to Hollywood studios, anticipating a competitive bidding war.

While Sweeney's role has not been finalized, she is set to portray one of the two sisters, Zoe or Mio, from the game. The decision on which character she will play remains pending.

Split Fiction, which only launched in March, has already become a significant success for Hazelight and its designer Josef Fares, selling over 2 million copies in just a week. It's also slated to be a launch title for the Nintendo Switch 2. IGN's review of the game was overwhelmingly positive, awarding it a 9/10 and praising it as "an expertly crafted co-op adventure that pinballs from one genre extreme to another, Split Fiction is a rollercoaster of constantly refreshed gameplay ideas and styles – and one that's very hard to walk away from."

Hazelight's success with Split Fiction follows the massive acclaim of their previous game, It Takes Two, which sold 23 million copies and is also being adapted into a film, potentially featuring Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson.

While there's always a risk that these ambitious projects might not come to fruition, the current surge in successful video game adaptations suggests that Hollywood is eager to capitalize on this trend. Story Kitchen is not stopping at Split Fiction; they have also announced adaptations for Just Cause, Dredge: The Movie, Kingmakers, Sleeping Dogs, and even a live-action Toys 'R' Us film.

Meanwhile, Hazelight is already teasing its next game, continuing to push the boundaries of interactive storytelling.
