Tekken 8: Director Defies Bandai Namco Tradition

Tekken 8 director Katsuhiro Harada's unwavering dedication to the series sometimes clashed with Bandai Namco's corporate structure. Known for his rebellious streak among fans, Harada admits his strong-willed approach wasn't always understood internally, potentially causing friction with colleagues.

Harada's unconventional path began early. He defied his parents' wishes to pursue a gaming career, sneaking out to play as a child and later facing their tears upon accepting a Bandai Namco arcade promotion job. This independent spirit continued even after he rose within the company.

Despite being reassigned to Bandai Namco's publishing division as head of global business development, Harada disregarded unspoken rules by actively shaping the future of Tekken, defying the typical transition of lead developers into management roles. He did so even though Tekken wasn't officially under his purview and his department differed from the game's development team.

This rebellious attitude extended to his team. Harada reveals they were labeled "outlaws" by Bandai Namco executives. He acknowledges their independent nature but believes their commitment to the Tekken series fueled its enduring popularity.

However, Harada's era as Tekken's rebellious leader may be ending. He hints that Tekken 9 will be his final project before retirement, leaving his legacy and the future of the franchise in question.
