The Witcher 4: A New Era Dawns, Geralt Rides Off Into the Sunset
CD Projekt Red (CDPR) has unveiled ambitious plans for The Witcher 4, promising the most immersive and expansive open-world experience yet in the acclaimed franchise. Executive producer Małgorzata Mitręga described it as "the most immersive and ambitious open-world Witcher game to date," emphasizing CDPR's commitment to exceeding expectations with each new title. Game director Sebastian Kalemba echoed this sentiment, highlighting the lessons learned from Cyberpunk 2077 and Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, which will inform the development of Witcher 4.
The cinematic trailer showcased Ciri, Geralt's adopted daughter, stepping into the role of the Witcher. Story director Tomasz Marchewka confirmed Ciri's central role was planned from the outset, citing her complex character and rich story potential. While the trailer hints at a slightly toned-down Ciri compared to her overpowered state at the end of Witcher 3, Mitręga and Kalemba remained tight-lipped about the specifics, promising in-game clarification on the changes to her abilities. Mitręga did confirm that Ciri retains Geralt's influence, stating, "She's faster, more agile—but you can still tell that she was raised by Geralt."
With Ciri taking the reins, Geralt's days of monster hunting appear to be over. Information from Andrzej Sapkowski's novel, Rozdroże kruków, reveals Geralt's age to be significantly older than previously assumed by many fans. By the time of Witcher 4, Geralt would likely be in his seventies or nearing eighty, a fact that has surprised some within the fanbase. While Witcher lore suggests Witchers can live to be a hundred, Geralt's advanced age adds a new layer to his character arc and sets the stage for a new chapter in the Witcher saga.
