'We Have Not Modified It' — The Witcher 4 Director Responds to Speculation CD Projekt Changed Ciri's Face

by Christian Mar 21,2025

The director of *The Witcher 4* has clarified that recent video footage showcasing Ciri utilizes the same in-game model used in the initial reveal trailer, dispelling rumors of a redesigned character. CD Projekt Red's behind-the-scenes look at *The Witcher 4*'s cinematic reveal, specifically at the 2:11 and 5:47 marks, featured close-ups of Ciri that sparked discussion among fans regarding her appearance.

These close-ups, showing a seemingly different facial structure compared to the reveal trailer, ignited a debate, with some praising the new look as a more mature representation of Ciri, while others echoed previous criticisms of her design in the original trailer. Speculation arose that CD Projekt Red had altered Ciri's face in response to this feedback.

However, *The Witcher 4* game director Sebastian Kalemba took to social media to clarify the situation. He stated that the model remains unchanged, emphasizing that the footage shown was "raw," lacking the final cinematic lighting, animation, and camera effects applied to the reveal trailer. This difference, he explained, is a normal aspect of game development, where character appearances can vary across different mediums (trailers, 3D models, in-game).

The upcoming *Witcher 4*, the first in a new trilogy, features Ciri as the protagonist instead of Geralt. Executive producer Małgorzata Mitręga, in an exclusive interview with IGN, explained that Ciri was the natural choice, given her prominence in the books and the desire to continue the saga after Geralt's previous story arc. Kalemba further added that Ciri's younger age allows for greater player agency in shaping her character and offers more narrative exploration opportunities.

While acknowledging potential negative reactions to Ciri's starring role, both Mitręga and Kalemba affirmed that her selection was a deliberate and well-considered decision, emphasizing the depth of her story and the potential for a compelling narrative. Geralt's voice actor, Doug Cockle, also expressed his excitement about this shift in the series, highlighting the narrative potential stemming from the books.
