Xbox Revives Friend Requests: A Decade-Long Wait Ends!

Xbox has finally reinstated the much-missed friend request system, ending a ten-year absence and answering the pleas of countless gamers. This article details the return of this crucial social feature.
A Welcome Return to Two-Way Connections
Xbox's announcement, shared via blog and Twitter (X), marks a significant shift from the previous decade's "follow" system. As Xbox Senior Product Manager Klarke Clayton stated, "We’re thrilled to announce the return of friend requests. Friends are now a two-way, invite-approved relationship, giving you more control and flexibility." The familiar friend request functionality returns via the console's People tab.
The "follow" system, while fostering an open social environment, lacked the control and intentionality of friend requests. The lines between friends and casual followers often blurred, creating confusion and limiting the ability to manage online connections effectively.

The "follow" feature will remain, allowing users to track content creators or communities without mutual approval. Existing friends and followers will be automatically categorized under the new system, maintaining existing connections.
Enhanced Privacy and Control
Microsoft prioritizes user privacy. The update includes new privacy and notification settings, allowing users to control friend requests, follower requests, and notification preferences, all accessible within the Xbox settings menu.

Positive Reception and Anticipation
Social media erupted with positive feedback. Gamers celebrated the return, highlighting the frustrations of the previous system's overwhelming follower influx. Some users even humorously admitted they were unaware of the feature's absence.

While the precise release date remains unannounced, the feature is currently being tested by Xbox Insiders on consoles and PC. A full rollout is expected later this year. Join the Xbox Insiders program to experience the friend request revival early!
