Sesame Street Makes a Major Move: New Home on Netflix and PBS for 2025 Season

The beloved children’s classic Sesame Street is entering a new era — and it’s bringing its iconic red-and-yellow world to a wider audience than ever before.

In a landmark announcement made on May 19, 2025, Sesame Workshop revealed that new episodes of Sesame Street will premiere globally on Netflix, marking the end of a long-standing partnership with HBO and Max. At the same time, PBS stations and PBS Kids will continue to air new episodes in the U.S. on the same day, preserving the show’s deep-rooted connection to public broadcasting since its 1969 debut.

This strategic, public-private alliance brings together the nonprofit power of Sesame Workshop, the reach of PBS, and the global streaming platform Netflix — a first for the franchise. The deal ensures that children around the world will have access to both new content and the full Sesame Street library, including beloved classics like "Elmo’s World" and "Cookie Monster’s Foodie Truck," which are returning in updated forms.

A Fresh Format for a New Generation

For its 56th season, Sesame Street is introducing a restructured narrative format, featuring a 11-minute central story per episode, inspired by contemporary hit shows like Bluey. This character-driven storytelling approach aims to deepen emotional engagement and foster empathy, curiosity, and critical thinking — core values the show has championed for over five decades.

Games, Play, and Innovation

As part of the new partnership, Netflix will expand into original children’s gaming, with Sesame Street and its spinoff Sesame Street Mecha Builders launching interactive video games exclusively for Netflix subscribers. These games will allow children to play along with their favorite Muppets using mobile devices as controllers — blending play, learning, and imagination in innovative ways.

"This unique public-private alliance ensures Sesame Street continues to help children grow smarter, stronger, and kinder — no matter where they live," said Sesame Workshop in a statement. "We’re proud to evolve with the times while staying true to our mission."

Why the Shift?

The move away from HBO and Max follows the expiration of a $35 million deal made in 2015, when the two platforms began producing new episodes. However, HBO and Max have recently pulled back from children’s programming, citing low engagement among adult subscribers and a shift in content strategy.

Despite this, the Sesame Street library will remain available on HBO and Max through 2027, extending the original 10-year agreement. No new episodes will be produced for those platforms, but fans can still enjoy decades of educational entertainment on the streamer until that date.

What’s Next?

  • Global Launch: New episodes premiere on Netflix worldwide starting in 2025.
  • U.S. Broadcast: New episodes air the same day on PBS stations and PBS Kids platforms.
  • New Formats: 11-minute story arcs, returning classics, and enhanced digital experiences.
  • Games: Interactive titles launching on Netflix in 2025.

“Sesame Street isn’t just a show — it’s a movement,” said a Sesame Workshop executive. “And now, with Netflix and PBS, it’s a global movement.”

From the streets of New York to living rooms across six continents, the journey continues — one song, one lesson, and one hug at a time.

🔴 Stay tuned. The world is ready for more Sesame. 🌍📺🪄
