Warner Bros. Sought Michael Bay's Man of Steel Sequel with Henry Cavill Before Gunn's Reboot

by Claire Jun 12,2025

In a surprising twist of events, Warner Bros. had reportedly approached *Transformers* director Michael Bay to helm a *Man of Steel* sequel featuring Henry Cavill in the iconic role of Superman. This development was said to have taken place before the major overhaul of the DC Universe and James Gunn’s subsequent reboot of the franchise.

According to sources at TheWrap, studio executives Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy were actively working on a plan to bring back Cavill for a standalone Superman film in 2022—with none other than Michael Bay being considered to direct. This effort was part of a broader initiative to reinvigorate the DC Extended Universe, occurring prior to the official announcement that James Gunn and Peter Safran would take over as co-heads of DC Studios in October of that same year.

Unfortunately for fans of Cavill’s Superman, these plans never materialized. Shortly after Gunn and Safran took the reins, the direction of the DCU shifted dramatically. By December 2022—just two months after their appointment—Cavill officially exited the franchise, marking the end of his tenure as the Man of Steel.

A New Vision for Superman

Under James Gunn’s creative leadership, the future of Superman has taken an entirely new path. David Corenswet (*Pearl*, *Hollywood*) is set to step into the cape as the new Clark Kent/Superman, alongside Rachel Brosnahan (*The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel*) as intrepid reporter Lois Lane. Nicholas Hoult rounds out the central trio as the cunning Lex Luthor.

This fresh start has left many wondering what could have been if Michael Bay and Henry Cavill had been given one more shot at bringing their vision of Superman to life. While it's unlikely we’ll ever know, the decision ultimately paved the way for a bold new era in the DC Universe.

What’s Next for Cavill and Bay?

Despite the unrealized Superman project, both Henry Cavill and Michael Bay remain active in the entertainment industry. Cavill is currently involved in several high-profile ventures, including a live-action *Voltron* movie and a reboot of the classic *Highlander* franchise.

Meanwhile, Bay recently released a documentary titled *We Are Storror*, which follows the adrenaline-fueled world of parkour athletes. Although rumors circulated about him directing the bizarre-sounding *Skibidi Toilet* movie, Bay publicly denied any involvement via social media last month.

James Gunn’s Superman – Coming July 2025

Fans of the Last Son of Krypton can look forward to James Gunn’s reimagined take on the superhero legend. Superman is scheduled for release in theaters on **July 11, 2025**, promising a modern and character-driven approach to the iconic DC hero.
