We're currently experiencing a golden age for video game adaptations, with hits like The Super Mario Bros. Movie, the Sonic the Hedgehog series, and acclaimed TV shows such as The Last of Us and Fallout. The excitement doesn't stop there, as upcoming projects like God of War and Ghost of Tsushima promise to continue this trend. These modern adaptations are setting a high bar, far surpassing the quality of earlier video game movies and shows.
It's still unclear how many of these eagerly anticipated projects will actually come to fruition, but we're closely monitoring their progress. Keep in mind that only a select few have confirmed release dates at this point.
For our purposes, we define a "video game movie" or "TV show" as a direct adaptation of an existing game. This means films like Wreck-It Ralph, which are merely about video games, don't count. These adaptations don't need to be strictly faithful to the source material; they just need to be inspired by actual games.
Explore the slideshow below for a sneak peek, or continue reading to discover detailed information on the most promising upcoming projects. If you spot any inaccuracies or missing details, feel free to share your insights in the comments!
