Ark Fans Outraged Over AI-Generated Content in Expansion Trailer

by Gabriel Mar 29,2025

A new Ark: Survival Evolved expansion trailer from publisher Snail Games has stirred significant controversy within the Ark community due to its use of generative AI imagery, which has been widely criticized as substandard. The trailer was released following Snail Games’ GDC announcement of its “in-house developed new expansion map, Ark: Aquatica”. This expansion is described by the studio as a non-canonical side story to Ark, set in an ambitious underwater environment where 95% of the gameplay occurs beneath the surface.

The backlash was swift and severe. Irish YouTuber Syntac, a prominent figure in the Ark community with over 1.9 million subscribers, expressed his dismay with a top comment on the Ark: Aquatica trailer, stating, “This is disgusting and you should be ashamed of yourselves.” The community's reaction was overwhelmingly negative, with viewers describing the trailer as “pathetic” and “embarrassing.” The trailer's use of AI-generated visuals was particularly criticized, featuring anomalies such as fish that blur in and out of existence, a deformed hand holding a spear gun, a levitating octopus in front of an ambiguous shipwreck, and human feet morphing into flippers.

Marvel as this man's foot magically turns into a fin.

In response, the original Ark: Survival Evolved developer, Studio Wildcard, quickly distanced itself from the controversy. The studio clarified on social media that Ark: Aquatica is not being developed by its team, emphasizing their commitment to other projects. Studio Wildcard stated, “Studio Wildcard remains entirely dedicated to the production of Ark: Survival Ascended & Ark 2, and we’re excited to bring Ark: Lost Colony to you later this year!”

Amidst ongoing fan speculation about the future of Ark 2, which missed its previously planned late 2024 release window, Studio Wildcard confirmed this week that development on the dinosaur survival sequel is continuing. They also announced Ark: Lost Colony, a new expansion for Ark: Survival Ascended that will serve as a precursor to the sequel.

Adding to the trailer's appeal, Ark: The Animated Series star Michelle Yeoh reprises her role, adding a familiar face to the controversial visuals.
