In Baldur's Gate 3's climactic moment, players face a pivotal decision: free the imprisoned Githyanki Prince Orpheus or let the Emperor handle him. This choice, made after acquiring the Orphic Hammer, significantly impacts the game's outcome and character relationships.

Updated February 29, 2024: Before this decision, players must defeat Ketheric Throm, Lord Enver Gortash, and Orin, requiring extensive exploration of Baldur's Gate. This final battle against the Netherbrain may even involve companion sacrifices. High skill checks (30+) are needed for certain interactions to influence companion choices.
Spoiler Warning: The following details the consequences of each choice.
Should You Free Orpheus?

The Emperor warns that freeing Orpheus risks party members becoming Illithids (Mind Flayers). After the Netherbrain encounter (which the Emperor teleports the party to via Astral Prism), the choice presents itself: liberate Orpheus or allow the Emperor to absorb his power.
Siding with the Emperor:
This leads to Orpheus' demise as the Emperor absorbs his knowledge. Lae'zel and Karlach may disapprove, impacting their personal quests. While this ensures victory over the Netherbrain, it's unpopular with fans of these characters.
Freeing Orpheus:
This causes the Emperor to ally with the Netherbrain. The risk of party members becoming Mind Flayers remains. However, Orpheus joins the fight alongside the Githyanki, and he may even willingly sacrifice himself to prevent others from becoming Mind Flayers.
In short, choose the Emperor to avoid becoming a Mind Flayer, but free Orpheus if you're willing to risk it. The Emperor's choice might alienate Lae'zel and send Karlach back to Avernus. The decision hinges on player preference.
The Moral Dilemma:
The "good" choice depends on individual values, but it boils down to loyalty. Orpheus is the rightful Githyanki ruler, opposing Vlaakith's tyranny. A Githyanki player might naturally side with him. However, following Voss and Lae'zel's directives can seem overly demanding. The Gith prioritize their own kind, even if their actions affect the wider world.
The Emperor, while generally benevolent and helpful, acknowledges necessary sacrifices. Following his plan might lead to becoming a Mind Flayer, but it's a morally sound path to victory. Remember, multiple endings exist; careful planning can lead to a satisfying conclusion for everyone.
