Blade Trilogy Writer Queries MCU Reboot Delay: 'Why So Long?'

by Jacob May 19,2025

The writer of the Wesley Snipes Blade trilogy, David S. Goyer, has expressed his readiness to assist Marvel chief Kevin Feige in resolving the stalled reboot of Mahershala Ali’s Blade in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The project, announced back in 2019 at San Diego Comic Con, has faced numerous setbacks and is currently off Marvel's release schedule with no confirmed new date.

Recent updates from individuals involved in the project shed light on its uncertain future. Rapper and artist Flying Lotus revealed on X / Twitter that he was once set to compose music for the film before it fell through. Costume designer Ruth E. Carter, during an appearance on The John Campea Show, confirmed her involvement in designing costumes for a version of the film set in the 1920s, which ultimately did not move forward. Actor Delroy Lindo, who was also attached to the project, shared with Entertainment Weekly that despite initial enthusiasm and inclusivity in discussions, the project derailed unexpectedly.

Goyer, who penned all three original Blade films and directed Blade: Trinity, expressed his confusion and eagerness to contribute to the reboot. "I would," he told ScreenRant when asked about writing the new Blade film, emphasizing his love for the character and his bewilderment at the delays.

Despite the removal of Blade from the release calendar, Kevin Feige remains committed to the project. In an interview with Omelete in November 2024, Feige assured fans that Marvel Studios still plans to bring Blade to the MCU, emphasizing their dedication to the character and Mahershala Ali's portrayal.

Meanwhile, the MCU film Deadpool & Wolverine, featuring a cameo by Wesley Snipes as Blade, was a massive success, grossing $1.3 billion globally. Ryan Reynolds, who stars as Deadpool, has advocated for a send-off film for Snipes' Blade, similar to Hugh Jackman's Logan, acknowledging the original Blade films' pivotal role in paving the way for the superhero genre and the MCU.

Reynolds is also reportedly in the early stages of developing a Deadpool and X-Men ensemble film, where Deadpool would share the spotlight with other X-Men characters, allowing them to be utilized in innovative ways.
