Anvils are essential for item repair. Crafting requires 4 iron ingots and 3 iron blocks (a total of 31 ingots!). Remember to smelt the ore first using a furnace or blast furnace. The crafting recipe is shown below:

Anvil Functionality

The anvil's crafting menu has three slots; only two can be used for repair. Two identical, low-durability tools can be combined into a new, fully durable one. Alternatively, you can use the item's crafting materials for repair.

Repairing consumes experience points; higher durability restoration costs more experience. Note that some items, including enchanted items, have specific repair requirements.

Repairing Enchanted Items

Repairing enchanted items is similar to repairing regular items, but requires more experience and higher-level enchanted items or enchanted books. Combining two enchanted items can create a higher-level, fully repaired item. The enchantments from both items are combined, along with durability. Success isn't guaranteed, and the cost varies depending on item placement – experiment!

Enchanted books can also be used in place of a second enchanted item. Using two books can further upgrade the item.

Anvil Limitations

Anvils have limited durability and will eventually break. They cannot repair scrolls, books, bows, chainmail, and several other items.

Repairing Items Without an Anvil

Minecraft offers alternative repair methods. A grindstone is one option, but a crafting table provides a simpler method. Combine identical items in the crafting table to increase durability, similar to using an anvil. This is more efficient than carrying an anvil during travel.
