David Fincher and Brad Pitt are set to collaborate once again, this time to bring to life a sequel to Quentin Tarantino's "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood." According to The Playlist, the duo is working on this unexpected project for Netflix, reinforcing Fincher's ongoing partnership with the streaming service. The tentatively untitled sequel will feature Brad Pitt reprising his role as stuntman Cliff Booth.
The script, an evolved version of Tarantino's previously shelved project titled "The Movie Critic," found its way to Fincher through a fascinating turn of events. Tarantino, unwilling to let the story die, entrusted Fincher with the screenplay. Netflix reportedly acquired the script for $20 million, with plans to allocate a $200 million budget and begin filming in California in July.
While Leonardo DiCaprio is not expected to return as Rick Dalton, the focus remains on Pitt and Fincher, who have prioritized this project above all others. Deadline has confirmed The Playlist's report, noting that Pitt received Tarantino's approval to share the script with Fincher, leading to this surprising development.
"Once Upon a Time in Hollywood," which premiered in 2019, set a high bar for its sequel. The original film concluded definitively, but Tarantino's 2021 novelization expanded on the universe and offered new insights into Cliff Booth's backstory, including the mystery surrounding his wife's death. This novelization may play a significant role in the sequel, though the extent of its influence remains to be seen.
