Square Enix has temporarily halted the automatic housing demolition timers on all four Final Fantasy 14 North American data centers just one day after they were restarted. This decision was made in response to the ongoing Los Angeles wildfires, and the company will continue to monitor the situation before deciding when to resume the timers.
In Final Fantasy 14, due to the limited availability of housing plots on game servers, Square Enix implements an automatic demolition timer of up to 45 days to free up plots occupied by inactive players or free companies. This timer resets only when the plot's owner visits their estate, encouraging continuous subscription to maintain their virtual home. However, in cases where players cannot log in due to natural disasters or other real-world events, Square Enix temporarily pauses these timers on affected servers or data centers, providing advance notice of when the pause will end.
Although Final Fantasy 14 had previously announced the resumption of automatic housing demolitions in North America, this plan was quickly reversed. According to the Lodestone, the pause on auto-demolitions took effect on Thursday, January 9, at 11:20 PM Eastern, due to the Los Angeles wildfires. No specific timeline was provided for when the timers would restart. The previous pause, which ended on January 8, was due to the aftermath of Hurricane Helene. The current moratorium applies only to Final Fantasy 14 players and free companies with housing plots on the Aether, Primal, Crystal, or Dynamis data centers. Homeowners can reset their timers to the full 45-day duration by visiting their estates during the ongoing pause.
Square Enix is closely monitoring the Los Angeles wildfires and has expressed its sympathies to all affected players. The impact of these wildfires extends beyond Final Fantasy 14, as seen with the postponement of the Critical Role Campaign 3 climax and the relocation of an NFL playoff game between the Los Angeles Rams and the Minnesota Vikings to Glendale, Arizona.
With the moratorium on housing demolitions and the return of the free login campaign, Final Fantasy 14 players are experiencing an eventful start to 2025. The duration of the current auto-demolition pause remains uncertain.
