Gears of War: Reloaded's release date has been announced, launching on PS5 the same day as Xbox. Dive into the details of its multiplatform release and discover the enhancements fans can anticipate in this revamped classic.
Gears of War, traditionally an Xbox exclusive and a cornerstone of the Microsoft console's iconic franchises, is breaking new ground. In a Twitter (X) post on May 6, Xbox confirmed that Gears of War: Reloaded will launch on all platforms, including PS5, on August 26.
This move aligns with Xbox's ongoing strategy to extend its exclusive titles to various platforms. Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer, in a January interview with GamerTag Radio, emphasized this approach, saying, "We love our platform and our hardware but we're not going to put walls up where people can engage with the great games our studios are building."
This strategy hints that the forthcoming Gears of War: E-Day might also adopt a multiplatform release, potentially arriving on the same day as the PS5 version. However, Xbox has not yet confirmed this, leaving fans to await further announcements regarding the future of their other exclusives.
The announcement of Reloaded took fans by surprise, especially since the original game was remastered with Gears of War: Ultimate Edition back in 2015. In an Xbox Wire post on May 5, The Coalition’s Studio Head Mike Crump elaborated on what players can expect from this new release.
He stated, "As we approach the 20th anniversary of Gears of War in 2026, we’re reflecting on what this franchise means. It’s about the stories we’ve told, the friendships we’ve built, and the unforgettable moments we’ve shared together. With Gears of War: Reloaded, we’re opening that door to more players than ever."
Reloaded promises significant performance upgrades over the 2015 release. The Ultimate Edition ran at 1080p at 30fps for the campaign and 60fps for multiplayer. In contrast, Reloaded will deliver 4k resolution at 60fps in the campaign, and an impressive 120fps in multiplayer. It will also feature 4k assets, remastered textures, enhanced post-processing visual effects, improved shadows and reflections, and more.
The Xbox Wire post further detailed, "Players will gain immediate access to all post-launch downloadable content at no additional cost — this includes the bonus Campaign act, all multiplayer maps and modes, and a full roster of classic characters and cosmetics unlockable through progression."
Moreover, Reloaded offers a free upgrade for those who own The Ultimate Edition prior to the announcement. Eligible Xbox account holders will receive an upgrade code via direct message before the game's launch.
Gears of War: Reloaded is slated for release on August 26, priced at $39.99 on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC. It will be available on day one with Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass.
