The internet buzzed with speculation that Hollow Knight: Silksong would grace the Nintendo Switch 2 announcement during the April 2nd Nintendo Direct. Let's delve into the details fueling this frenzy.
The Hollow Knight community was once again thrown into a whirlwind of conjecture thanks to William Pellen, one of the game's creators, and his cryptic Twitter (now X) activity preceding and during the Switch 2 reveal on January 16, 2025.
On January 15th, Pellen tweeted, "Something big is coming. Keep your eyes peeled tomorrow," a seemingly obvious nod to the leaked Switch 2 announcement. The inevitable Silksong queries arose, but Pellen's subsequent actions further ignited speculation.
On January 16th, 2025, the Switch 2 announcement confirmed an upcoming Direct on April 2nd, 2025. A keen-eyed fan noticed Pellen had changed his profile picture to a slice of cake. A reverse image search revealed the image originated from a Bon Appetit article featuring a Brooklyn Blackout Cake recipe, published on April 2nd, 2024.
Pellen also commented on the article with "mmmm tasty," prompting dedicated fans to dissect both the cake and its connection to Silksong. One fan even boldly declared, "If we get real Silksong news by April 2nd, 2025, I will bake this cake!" Another playfully remarked, "Loved the silky texture. This goes directly into my favorite recipes," cleverly linking the game to Nintendo's upcoming Direct.
It's crucial to note that Pellen's comment on the recipe remains unverified. However, his profile picture change is undeniable, hinting at something – though that "something" might ultimately be nothing.
Hollow Knight: Silksong was initially announced on February 14th, 2019, slated for release on Nintendo Switch, PS5, PS4, PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S. This sequel follows Hornet's adventures in a kingdom ruled by silk and song.
Following a December 2019 preview of the game's soundtrack by Christopher Larkin, Team Cherry went largely silent for over two years.
They resurfaced in February 2022, with Pellen reassuring fans of the game's ongoing development and promising updates closer to release. A June 2022 trailer during the Xbox and Bethesda Showcase offered new gameplay footage and confirmed the game's Game Pass inclusion upon launch.
Despite initial hopes for a 2023 release, Team Cherry's Matthew Griffin confirmed a delay in May 2023. "We had planned to release in the first half of 2023, but development is still ongoing," he explained. "We're excited by how the game is shaping up, and it's gotten quite big, so we want to take the time to make the game as good as we can."
After five years, the Hollow Knight fanbase remains fervent, actively searching for any news regarding Silksong. However, information has been scarce since the delay announcement, beyond the developers' continued work on the title.
