Jack Black Builds Mansion on Private Minecraft Movie Server

by Isaac Apr 12,2025

The recently released *A Minecraft Movie* has brought a unique twist to its production process by integrating a private Minecraft server for the entire cast and crew. This innovative approach was aimed at enhancing the authenticity of the film, which is based on the popular video game. Jack Black, who plays the iconic character Steve, immersed himself in the game by constructing an impressive mansion on the highest mountain within the server, complete with an art gallery in the basement.

The use of Minecraft during the filmmaking process was described by producer Torfi Frans Ólafsson as creating an atmosphere reminiscent of an indie game studio. This environment fostered a dynamic exchange of ideas, although not all could be implemented due to the film's ongoing development. However, it allowed the team to add unique touches that resonated with the essence of the game, enhancing the film's authenticity.

Director Jared Hess praised Jack Black's dedication to the role, noting that Black's engagement with Minecraft was methodical. Black spent time in his trailer harvesting resources like lapis lazuli and continuously building and brainstorming. This dedication not only enriched his performance but also contributed to the evolving nature of the film's creative process.

"I had an Xbox in my trailer and I did play because *an actor prepares,*" Jack Black said with a grin. He spent countless hours on the server, which was filled with props from various departments. Black's ambition was to showcase his skills as a 'real Minecrafter' by constructing a mansion atop the highest mountain, complete with a stairway leading to it and an art gallery in the basement. He humorously questioned whether his creation still existed.

"It's up!" confirmed Ólafsson, who not only kept the mansion intact but extended its availability for a year. Recently, he discovered two security guards from the set still active on the server, warmly welcoming him back.
