Composer Jack Wall, renowned for his iconic work on the soundtracks of the first two Mass Effect games, has shed light on why he did not return for the third installment, Mass Effect 3. Wall's contributions to the series, particularly with the 2007 original and the highly acclaimed 2010 sequel, Mass Effect 2, have been pivotal. The latter, often hailed as one of the greatest action RPGs ever created, boasts the memorable 'Suicide Mission' track, which fans consider a pinnacle of the series.
In a recent interview with The Guardian, Wall revealed that a falling out with Casey Hudson, who was the lead on the Mass Effect series at the time, led to his absence from Mass Effect 3. Wall expressed his pride in the Mass Effect 2 score, which earned a BAFTA nomination, despite the tensions with Hudson. "Casey was not particularly happy with me at the end," Wall stated, hinting at the underlying issues without delving into specifics. He described the fallout as "part of the deal" and noted it was one of the few such incidents in his career.
Wall also reflected on the immense challenges faced during the development of Mass Effect 2, particularly with the 'Suicide Mission' track. He described the process as a monumental task, compounded by the pressure of the game's completion. "It was the biggest mind-f\*\*\*ing thing I’ve ever done in my entire life," he said, acknowledging the significant effort from BioWare's team to integrate his work into the final product successfully.
Following his departure from the Mass Effect series, Wall continued his career by composing for various Call of Duty games, with his most recent work being on Black Ops 6. Meanwhile, BioWare is now focusing on the next installment in the Mass Effect franchise, following the release of Dragon Age: The Veilguard, though they have yet to announce the composer for the upcoming game.
