Jon Bernthal's Punisher Set for Return in Marvel Special Post-Daredevil: Born Again

Fans of the gritty Marvel universe have exciting news on the horizon: Jon Bernthal's iconic portrayal of The Punisher is set to make a triumphant return following the first season of Daredevil: Born Again. This time, Frank Castle will star in a standalone Marvel special that mirrors the style of the Guardians of the Galaxy specials. Entertainment Weekly has confirmed that Bernthal will also take on the role of writer for this project, collaborating with We Own This City director Reinaldo Marcus Green.

Brad Winderbaum, head of Marvel Television, expressed enthusiasm about the project, stating, "It's like a shotgun blast of a story, but also has all the pathos and emotion that you want out of a Frank Castle story. It's so exciting."

The announcement of the Punisher one-shot comes as Marvel Television gears up for the return of the Defenders on Disney+. This street-level superhero team, featuring Matt Murdock's Daredevil, Krysten Ritter's Jessica Jones, Mike Colter's Luke Cage, and Finn Jones' Iron Fist, was last seen in action on Netflix before their episodes were migrated to Disney+ and integrated into the MCU canon.

Brad Winderbaum shared his excitement about exploring this universe further, telling Entertainment Weekly, "It’s certainly exciting to be able to play in that sandbox. Obviously, we don’t have the unlimited storytelling resources like a comic book, [where] if you can draw it, you can do it. We’re dealing with actors and time and the massive scale of production in order to build a cinematic universe, especially on television. But I can just say that all those variables taken into account, it is certainly something that is creatively extremely exciting and that we are very much exploring."

Daredevil: Born Again, set to premiere on March 4, continues the saga that began on Netflix. The series will see the return of several beloved characters, including The Punisher and Vincent D'Onofrio's Wilson Fisk (Kingpin). This season introduces a new threat in the form of the artistically inclined serial killer known as Muse.
