The much-anticipated Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link, a GPS-based action-RPG designed for mobile platforms, has unfortunately been canceled. However, there's a silver lining for fans of the franchise: Square Enix has assured that it is still diligently working on Kingdom Hearts 4.
Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link was set to transport players to the enchanting realm of Scala ad Caelum, offering a fresh, original storyline centered around the ongoing struggle against the Heartless. The game was originally scheduled for release in 2024, but in a heartfelt statement shared on the game's X/Twitter account, Square Enix announced the cancellation. The statement expressed deep regret to fans eagerly awaiting the game, explaining that the decision was made because it would be challenging to deliver a service that would meet player satisfaction over an extended period. Unfortunately, the specifics of these challenges were not detailed.
"We wish to convey our heartfelt apologies to everyone who has been looking forward to the start of service," the statement read. "Although we worked hard on developing and adjusting the game in the hope that it would be enjoyed by lots of players, we determined that it would be difficult for us to offer a service that players would find satisfactory over a long period of time, leading us to the decision to cancel development."
Square Enix took the opportunity to thank everyone who participated in the multiple closed beta tests and reiterated their commitment to the Kingdom Hearts series. The statement concluded on a hopeful note, confirming that "we are hard at work on Kingdom Hearts 4, and hope you'll continue to support the series as you keep an eye out for further updates."
This mention of Kingdom Hearts 4 marks the first official update on the eagerly awaited sequel in months, following a tiny, cryptic tease back in January. Despite a full cinematic trailer released in September 2022, developer Square Enix has remained largely silent, leaving fans yearning for more information, which is typical of the series' tradition of keeping fans on their toes.
Series director Tetsuya Nomura has hinted that Kingdom Hearts 4 will mark a significant shift in the narrative, steering the saga towards its conclusion after an expansive 22-year journey spanning 18 games.
