David Leitch, the acclaimed director behind hits like Atomic Blonde (2017), Deadpool 2 (2018), Hobbs & Shaw (2019), and Bullet Train (2022), is currently in negotiations to helm Netflix's adaptation of the iconic video game, Gears of War. This news comes from The Hollywood Reporter, which detailed that Leitch, along with his partner Kelly McCormick, will produce the film alongside The Coalition, the developers of the game. The script for this ambitious project is being penned by Jon Spaihts, known for his work on Dune.
It has been over two years since Netflix acquired the rights to Gears of War, and it seems the project is finally gaining momentum. Alongside the movie, an adult animated series is also in development, set to expand the Gears universe further. Depending on the success of these adaptations, fans can expect more content in the future.
One of the most pressing questions surrounding the film is who will portray the iconic protagonist, Marcus Fenix. Dave Bautista, a former wrestler turned actor, has publicly expressed his strong desire to take on the role, even receiving an endorsement from Gears co-creator Cliff Bleszinski.
The video game adaptation genre is experiencing a boom, with recent successes like The Super Mario Bros. Movie, A Minecraft Movie, and the Sonic series setting new benchmarks. Other notable adaptations include Uncharted, Mortal Kombat, and various Resident Evil projects, signaling a thriving market for these types of films.

Microsoft's gaming chief, Phil Spencer, recently shared insights into the company's approach to video game adaptations. Despite the underwhelming reception of the Halo TV series, Spencer emphasized that Microsoft remains committed to exploring more adaptations. He highlighted that the company is learning and growing from each project, which is boosting their confidence in this arena.
"We’re learning and growing through this process, which is giving us more confidence that we should do more," Spencer stated. He further elaborated, "We learned from doing Halo. We learned from doing Fallout. So all of these build on themselves. And obviously we’ll have a couple that miss. But what I’d say to the Xbox community that likes this work is, ‘You’re going to see more, because we’re gaining confidence and we’re learning through this.’"
In the gaming world, The Coalition is currently developing Gears of War: E-Day, a prequel to the series, though no release date has been announced yet.
