Nintendo has officially clarified the contents of the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition games, dispelling confusion that arose from earlier reports. Contrary to customer service statements suggesting otherwise, Nintendo confirmed to Vooks that the physical versions of Nintendo Switch 2 Edition games include both the original game and its upgrade on the same cartridge. This means that when you purchase a Nintendo Switch 2 Edition game, you get a complete package on one game card, specifically designed for the Nintendo Switch 2.
However, it's worth noting that Nintendo also mentioned that some publishers might opt to release Nintendo Switch 2 Edition games as download codes enclosed in physical packaging, without a game card. This alternative method provides another way for gamers to enjoy the enhanced versions of their favorite titles.
Here’s the Nintendo statement:“Physical versions of Nintendo Switch 2 Edition games will include the original Nintendo Switch game and its upgrade pack all on the same game card (i.e. they are exclusively Nintendo Switch 2 game cards, with no download code). Alternatively, some publishers may release Nintendo Switch 2 Edition games as download codes in physical packaging, with no game card.”
Priced at $79.99, the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition games offer enhanced experiences over their original Switch counterparts. Titles such as Kirby and The Forgotten Land - Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Star Crossed World, Super Mario Party Jamboree - Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Jamboree TV, and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition are part of this lineup. These games not only come with upgraded content but also feature new additions like the Zelda Notes service in the Nintendo Switch App for games like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, along with achievements on the Switch 2.

Nintendo has also introduced a new type of product for the Switch 2: game-key cards. These cards do not contain the actual game data but instead provide a key to download the game. When you insert a game-key card into your Switch 2, you'll need to download the game to play it. These cards are clearly marked on the front of their packaging, ensuring consumers are aware of what they're buying. Examples of games using this format include Street Fighter 6 and the Bravely Default remaster, while others like Mario Kart World and Donkey Kong Bananza do not. Notably, Cyberpunk 2077, with its hefty 64 GB size on the Nintendo Switch 2, is available on a traditional game card.
