Nintendo Store Sets Preorder Limits on Switch 2 to Combat Scalpers

by Henry May 24,2025

The highly anticipated Nintendo Switch 2 is set to launch on June 5, 2025, and it's expected to be one of the most sought-after items of the year. To ensure that true fans get their hands on the console, Nintendo has introduced a strategic pre-order system on the My Nintendo Store. Here, users with a Nintendo Account can express their interest in pre-ordering a Nintendo Switch 2 system along with "select accessories." Those who sign up will receive an invitation email when it's their turn to pre-order, valid for 72 hours.

However, there's a twist: eligibility for these invitations is based on your history with the current Nintendo Switch. According to the fine print on the site, "Invitation emails will be prioritized on a first-come, first-served basis to registrants who have purchased a Nintendo Switch Online membership with a minimum of 12 months of paid membership and a minimum of 50 total gameplay hours, as of April 2, 2025." This means that only dedicated Switch users will get priority access to pre-order the new console.

Nintendo emphasizes that these invitations are "non-transferable" and will be sent to the email addresses linked to the Nintendo Account that registered interest. During the invitation period, there will be a one-per-account limit for both the system and each accessory. You can choose between a base Nintendo Switch 2 system or one bundled with Mario Kart World. Once an order is placed, it will be shipped after purchase, with an approximate shipping date provided at the time of ordering. Nintendo clarifies that "release-day delivery is not guaranteed due to processing and shipment times."

These measures are designed to ensure that the people buying a Switch 2 are genuine gamers looking to enjoy the console themselves, rather than resellers aiming to flip it for a profit. Scalping has been a significant issue with high-demand products like the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, as well as the Pokémon Trading Card Game.

Valve implemented a similar successful strategy with the Steam Deck, tying purchases to Steam accounts and checking account creation dates. It's no surprise that Nintendo is following suit with the My Nintendo Store process. While there will be other avenues to purchase a Switch 2, this system could help long-time Switch owners secure a pre-order without the chaos typically associated with such launches.
