Nintendo Switch 2 Enhances Original Games

by Ellie Apr 24,2025

The long-awaited Nintendo Switch 2 has arrived, and as previously reported, it offers impressive backwards compatibility with Switch 1 games. However, Nintendo is taking things a step further by introducing specially enhanced versions of Switch 1 games for the Switch 2. These enhancements go beyond mere graphical improvements and framerate boosts, promising a richer gaming experience.

Nintendo has categorized the games playable on the Switch 2 into three types: Native Switch 2 games, which are exclusively designed for the new system; Compatible Switch 1 games, which can be played directly on the Switch 2 using their original cartridges; and Switch 2 Edition games, which are enhanced versions of Switch 1 titles with new features and performance upgrades.

This categorization does not include the classic games available through Nintendo Switch Online, which offers a rich library spanning NES, SNES, Game Boy, Game Boy Advance, and now GameCube titles.

So What Comes in a Switch 2 Edition Game?

Nintendo's Switch 2 Direct highlighted that Switch 2 Edition games will offer more than just visual enhancements. For instance, Super Mario Party Jamboree will feature a new content suite called Jamboree TV, utilizing the Joy-Con 2's mouse controls, the Switch 2's microphone, and an optional USB-C camera. Alongside a resolution upgrade to 1440p in TV mode and improved frame rates, players can enjoy new minigames and enhanced online functionalities.

Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, a cross-gen title, will support Joy-Con 2's mouse controls and offer multiple display modes, including Quality Mode (60fps at 4K when docked, 60fps at 1080p in handheld) and Performance Mode (120fps at 1080p when docked, 120fps at 720p in handheld), all with HDR support.

Other Switch 2 Edition games like Kirby and the Forgotten Land will introduce new story content with the Star-Crossed World add-on, while The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom will integrate the Zelda Notes service in the Nintendo Switch App, providing in-game guides and assistance.

Some games, such as Pokemon Legends: Z-A, will primarily see performance and resolution enhancements as part of their Switch 2 Edition.

When are the Switch 2 Edition Games Coming?

Set for release on June 5, 2025, the Switch 2 will see the debut of its first batch of Switch 2 Edition games. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom will launch their Switch 2 Editions on the same day.

Super Mario Party Jamboree + Jamboree TV will follow on July 24, 2025, and Kirby and the Forgotten Land's update is slated for August 28, 2025. Metroid Prime 4: Beyond and Pokemon Legends: Z-A are expected to release their Switch 2 Editions sometime in 2025, though specific dates have not been announced.

The cost of Switch 2 Editions varies. New buyers can purchase these games at retail, identifiable by their red-colored physical cases and prominent Switch 2 logos on digital versions. Owners of the Switch 1 versions seeking the Switch 2 Edition upgrades will need to buy an upgrade pack, available at select retailers, the My Nintendo Store, and Nintendo eShop. The price for these upgrade packs has not yet been disclosed.

Some upgrade packs, such as those for Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, will be included with a Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership, which also provides access to online features and a classic game library.
