"Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Cons to Feature Innovative New Gimmick"

by Allison Apr 13,2025

Summary

  • The Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Cons may be able to operate in a computer mouse-like mode.
  • Mentions of adhesive tape normally used on the bottoms of computer mice were recently found in some shipping manifests believed to be associated with one of Nintendo's parts suppliers.
  • The Switch 2 wouldn't be the first handheld console to offer a mouse-like alternate mode for (one of) its controllers, as Lenovo's Legion GO already did the same back in 2023.

The Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Cons might soon double as computer mice, according to intriguing clues that have recently surfaced. While it remains to be seen if this mouse-like mode will be widely embraced by game developers, such a feature aligns with Nintendo's tradition of pushing the boundaries with innovative controller functionalities.

The evidence suggesting this possibility was brought to light by Famiboards user LiC, who has a history of uncovering valuable insights from Vietnamese customs data related to shipments from a company thought to be a parts supplier for Nintendo. This data has been a treasure trove of information, fueling numerous rumors and speculation about the Switch 2 since mid-2024.

In early January 2025, LiC shared another intriguing detail about the upcoming console, revealing that they had previously found references to a polyethylene (PE) plastic adhesive tape intended "to stick to game console handles." The shipping documents labeled these tape pieces as "mouse soles," a term typically associated with the bottom part of a computer mouse. This suggests that the Switch 2 might incorporate a mouse-like functionality.

LiC identified two model numbers for these mouse soles: LG7 and SML7. These designations are not found in any public component databases, hinting that they could be part of unreleased products. The data indicates that both pieces of plastic tape measure 90 x 90mm, which is large enough to cover the entire back of the new Joy-Cons, though their square shape might require trimming before assembly, assuming the information is accurate.

Nintendo Switch 2 Wouldn't Be the First Console With Mouse Controller Mode

While the concept of a mouse-like controller mode fits well with Nintendo's penchant for experimentation, it's worth noting that this technology has already been implemented elsewhere. For instance, the Lenovo Legion GO, released in 2023, features a right controller that can transform into a mouse when rotated sideways into a joystick-like configuration. Lenovo even includes a circular plastic piece to enhance its sliding capability on surfaces.

Additionally, the Lenovo Legion GO comes equipped with magnetic rails for attaching controllers, a feature rumored to be included in the Switch 2. This suggests that the Legion GO might offer a preview of what to expect from Nintendo's next hybrid console.
