Nintendo Tweaks Classic Character Post-Donkey Kong Redesign: First Look

by Ellie May 25,2025

Nintendo has recently unveiled a refreshed design for Diddy Kong, following the earlier transformation of his companion, Donkey Kong. Earlier this year, fans noticed significant updates to Donkey Kong's appearance in official artwork and within the preview footage of Mario Kart World.

Now, Diddy Kong has also undergone a redesign, as showcased through artwork on Nintendo's official website and at the Licensing Expo 2025 in Las Vegas. According to Nintendo Life, the new Diddy Kong features a more cartoonish style with rounder eyes and a more playful, friendly smile.

Attendees at the Licensing Expo 2025, where brands display their franchises to secure merchandise and partnership deals, have the opportunity to view the updated designs of both Diddy and Donkey Kong. Photos shared by attendee Cptn_Alex on social media highlight these new looks.

Nintendo has remained silent on the reasons behind the redesigns for Diddy Kong and the earlier changes to Donkey Kong. However, many believe these alterations align with the characters' appearances in the highly successful The Super Mario Bros. Movie.

Princess Peach has also seen a redesign, with her appearance updated on the box art of her Switch game, Princess Peach: Showtime!, to match her portrayal in the movie, as previously noted by IGN's sister site, Eurogamer.

Of course this post is popping off lmao. Here’s a better look at the new render :)

Looking ahead, Donkey Kong is set to star in the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 game, Donkey Kong Bananza. Although Diddy Kong's inclusion has not been officially confirmed, the presence of other Kong family members like Cranky Kong and the recent update to Diddy's design suggest a strong likelihood of his appearance. Additionally, with the upcoming Super Mario Bros. Movie sequel, tentatively titled Super Mario World, fans can expect to see more of Nintendo's iconic apes, complete with their updated designs.
