Nvidia Issues RTX 5090 and 5080 Stock Shortage Warning to PC Gamers Ahead of Hotly Anticipated Release Date

by Mia Feb 21,2025

The highly anticipated Nvidia RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 graphics cards are set to launch on January 30th, but concerns about immediate shortages are mounting. Reports from retailers and manufacturers suggest limited initial stock, fueled by the upcoming Lunar New Year.

Early indications point to extremely high demand, with potential buyers already lining up outside stores. The cards' high price points ($1,999 for the RTX 5090 and $999 for the RTX 5080) haven't deterred this enthusiasm.

Manufacturer MSI, citing the Lunar New Year, has confirmed limited initial availability, anticipating stock stabilization in February. Retailers like Overclockers UK have reported receiving only a handful of RTX 5090 units, echoing similar low stock levels for the RTX 5080. PowerGPU in the U.S. has even predicted the RTX 5090 launch will be the worst in terms of availability.

In response to growing concerns, Nvidia issued a statement acknowledging the anticipated high demand and potential for stock-outs. They assured consumers that they and their partners are actively working to increase retail stock.

Despite Nvidia's statement, scalpers are already capitalizing on the anticipated scarcity. Pre-sale listings on eBay are showing inflated prices, with one Asus ROG Astral RTX 5090 listed for a staggering $5,750 – a massive markup of 187% over the MSRP.

Adding to Nvidia's challenges, the company's share price experienced a significant drop (16.86%) following the announcement of the DeepSeek AI model, which poses a potential threat to Nvidia's datacenter GPU sales.
