Pokemon TCG Pocket: Paralyzed, Explained (& All Cards with ‘Paralyze’ Ability)

by George Jan 22,2025

This guide explores the Paralyze effect in Pokémon TCG Pocket, detailing its mechanics, counters, and optimal deck building strategies.

Quick Links

Pokémon TCG Pocket faithfully recreates the Paralyzed status condition from the physical card game. This guide provides a comprehensive overview of this effect.

What is Paralyzed in Pokémon TCG Pocket?

Paralyzed Status

The Paralyzed condition immobilizes your opponent's Active Pokémon for a single turn, preventing both attacks and retreats. This effect automatically expires at the start of your next turn after your opponent's Checkup phase.

Paralyzed vs. Asleep

Both Paralyzed and Asleep prevent attacks and retreats. However, Paralyzed resolves automatically, while Asleep requires a coin flip or specific counter-strategies (like evolving or retreating the Pokémon) to cure.

Paralyzed in Pocket vs. Physical TCG

Unlike the physical TCG, which features cards like Full Heal to remove Paralysis, Pokémon TCG Pocket currently lacks direct counter-cards. However, the core mechanic – preventing attacks and retreats for one turn – remains consistent.

Which Cards Inflict Paralysis?

Pokémon with Paralyze Ability

Currently, only three Genetic Apex cards inflict Paralysis: Pincurchin, Elektross, and Articuno. Each uses a coin flip, making Paralysis a somewhat unreliable effect due to its reliance on chance.

How to Cure Paralysis

Curing Paralysis

Four methods exist to remove the Paralyzed condition:

  1. Time: The effect automatically ends at the start of your next turn.
  2. Evolution: Evolving the Paralyzed Pokémon instantly cures it.
  3. Retreat: Retreating the Pokémon removes the status effect (as Bench Pokémon cannot be affected). Cards like Koga can force a retreat.
  4. Support Cards: Currently, only Koga offers a direct counter, but only for Weezing or Muk.

Building a Paralyze Deck

Sample Paralyze Deck

Paralysis alone is not a strong deck archetype. Combining it with Asleep creates a more effective strategy. An Articuno & Frosmoth deck, utilizing Articuno, Frosmoth, and Wigglytuff ex, is a viable example.

Sample Paralyze/Asleep Deck List

Card Quantity
Wigglypuff ex 2
Jigglypuff 2
Snom 2
Frosmoth 2
Articuno 2
Misty 2
Sabrina 2
X Speed 2
Professor's Research 2
Poke Ball 2
