Project Zomboid: How to Hotwire Cars

by Jonathan Jan 09,2025

In the sprawling world of Project Zomboid, traversing the map on foot is a daunting task. Fortunately, many vehicles remain functional, and if keys are elusive, hotwiring provides a solution. This guide details the process.

Hotwiring a car in Project Zomboid is surprisingly straightforward, requiring only a few button presses. However, prerequisites exist. While not demanding a top-tier character build, meeting these requirements is crucial for successful vehicle acquisition.

Hotwiring Mechanics in Project Zomboid

Successfully hotwiring unlocks vehicle use (fuel and condition permitting) without needing keys. To hotwire, you'll need at least Level 1 Electrical and Level 2 Mechanics skills. Alternatively, selecting the Burglar profession during character creation bypasses these skill requirements.

Hotwiring a Car: A Step-by-Step Guide

  1. Enter the vehicle.
  2. Access the vehicle's radial menu (default key: V).
  3. Choose the "Hotwire" option and wait briefly.

After meeting the prerequisites, follow these steps for any operable vehicle. The hotwiring process is automated; once complete, press W to start the engine. Remember to check fuel levels beforehand!

Skill Level Progression: Electrical and Mechanics

For non-Burglar characters, skill progression is achieved through in-game actions:

  • Electrical: Dismantle electronics (watches, radios, televisions).
  • Mechanics: Remove and reinstall mechanical parts.

Books and magazines also boost skills. Search homes, businesses, mailboxes, sheds, and bookshelves for these helpful items. Server admins can use the "/addxp" command (check in-game syntax) to directly grant skill XP to players.

Appropriate tools (at least a screwdriver) are necessary for dismantling and installation. Right-click vehicle parts and select "Vehicle Mechanics" to remove them.
