Scarlett Johansson Confirms Black Widow's Fate: 'She's Dead'

by Caleb Apr 27,2025

Scarlett Johansson, a veteran of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), has firmly stated that her character, Black Widow, is "dead" and she doesn't seem interested in returning to the role anytime soon. During an interview with InStyle, Johansson addressed the future of her iconic Avenger character as she prepares for her role in this summer's big-budget film, Jurassic World Rebirth. Despite her significant contribution to the MCU, Johansson made it clear she's ready to move on from Natasha Romanoff.

"Natasha is dead. She is dead. *She's dead.* Okay?" Johansson emphasized, responding to fans' hopes for her return. "We’re going to *have* to let it go. She saved the world. Let her have her hero moment." Black Widow's last appearance was in the 2021 standalone film, but her character met her end in 2019's Avengers: Endgame, sacrificing herself to save Jeremy Renner's Clint Barton, also known as Hawkeye. Despite the definitive nature of her death, fans have continued to speculate on ways she might return.

"They just don't want to believe it," Johansson remarked. "They’re like, ‘But she could come back!’ Look, I think the balance of the entire universe is held in her hand. We’re going to *have* to let it go. She saved the world. Let her have her hero moment."

The MCU has a history of bringing back deceased characters, and with upcoming event movies like Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, fans are buzzing about potential cameos. These films are not only pivotal for the MCU's storyline but are also rumored to feature a host of returning characters.

While Robert Downey Jr. is set to take on the role of Doctor Doom, rumors have circulated about other familiar faces returning. For instance, The Wrap reported that Chris Evans might reprise his role as Captain America, a claim he later denied. Additionally, Hayley Atwell's Agent Carter, who has died twice in the MCU, is rumored to appear in the upcoming Doomsday project. With so many possibilities, fans can't help but speculate, even as Johansson dismisses any chance of Black Widow's return. We'll have to wait until May 1, 2026, for Avengers: Doomsday, and May 7, 2027, for Avengers: Secret Wars to see which characters, living or dead, make an appearance.
