Shawn Levy's Star Wars Film: Sooner Than Expected, Says Writer

by Stella Apr 13,2025

Exciting news for Star Wars fans! Shawn Levy, the acclaimed director of Deadpool & Wolverine, is still actively working on his upcoming Star Wars movie, and we have a promising update straight from the film's writer, Jonathan Tropper. In a recent chat with Screen Rant, Tropper expressed his excitement and hinted that the project might be advancing faster than anticipated, saying, "I am [excited] too. I hope it's on the way sooner than you think."

While much about the film remains shrouded in mystery, we do know it will be set in the Star Wars universe post-The Rise of Skywalker. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy confirmed this in a February interview with Deadline, noting that Levy's film is a standalone story taking place "maybe five or six years out" from the events of the ninth episode. This positions the film as the first to explore the new era following the Skywalker saga's conclusion.

Kennedy also shared that Levy's movie is slated to follow the release of The Mandalorian and Grogu in 2026. Additionally, there's buzz that Ryan Gosling might star in this intriguing new venture. Given these updates, Tropper's optimistic comments suggest that the project is gaining momentum, though fans will need to wait until at least late 2026 or possibly 2027 for its release.

It's worth noting that Disney hasn't released a Star Wars film since the controversial Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker in 2019. During this hiatus, several other planned films were canceled, including one from Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and a trilogy from the Game of Thrones showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff. Moreover, a Star Wars movie originally set for late 2026 was recently removed from Disney's schedule.

At the 2023 Star Wars Celebration, Lucasfilm unveiled plans for three new feature films: a New Republic film directed by Dave Filoni set within the Mando-verse, a Dawn of the Jedi movie helmed by James Mangold, and a New Jedi Order film directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy featuring Daisy Ridley reprising her role as Rey post-The Rise of Skywalker. Despite some script changes, including Steven Knight's departure after taking over from Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson, Rey remains a central figure in Disney's future Star Wars plans, according to a recent THR report.

Disney's Star Wars lineup doesn't stop there. X-Men producer Simon Kinberg is set to write a new trilogy, which, contrary to initial rumors, will not be a continuation of the Skywalker Saga.

The next Star Wars project to captivate audiences will be Season 2 of Andor, premiering on Disney+ on April 22 with a special triple-episode launch. As anticipation builds for these upcoming projects, Star Wars fans have plenty to look forward to in the galaxy far, far away.
