Street Fighter Tournament “Sleep Fighter” Announced in JapanPlayers Need to Start Racking Up Sleep Points a Week Before Tourney
Not sleeping enough will get players penalized at a new Street Fighter tournament called the "Sleep Fighter." Announced earlier this week, this official Capcom-backed event is being organized by SS Pharmaceuticals, a pharma company, to promote its sleep-aid drug Drewell.
The Sleep Fighter tournament is a team-based event where each team comprises three players who will compete in a "best-of-three" match to accumulate the most points and secure victory. The teams with the most points will advance to the next round. In addition to earning points through victories, teams will also earn "Sleep Points" based on their logged sleep hours.
In the week leading up to the Sleep Fighter tournament, each team member must sleep at least six hours per night. If a team does not reach 126 hours of sleep, they will lose five points for every hour they fall short. As an added incentive, the team with the highest total sleep time will get to decide the tournament's match conditions.
SS Pharmaceuticals is promoting this event to demonstrate the importance of sleep, as the company expresses that proper sleep is necessary to perform at one's best. Their campaign, "Let's Do the Challenge, Let's Sleep First," aims to raise awareness and encourage healthy sleeping habits in Japan. Sleep Fighter is the first esports tournament to incorporate a rule penalizing players for insufficient sleep, per the official website.

The Sleep Fighter tournament will be held on August 31 at Ryogoku KFC Hall Tokyo. Attendance at the venue will be limited to 100 people, selected by lottery. For those outside Japan, the tournament will be streamed live on YouTube and Twitch. Further details on the broadcast will be shared at a later time over at the official tournament website and Twitter (X) account.
The tournament will host over a dozen professional players and game streamers for a day of competitive gaming and sleep wellness. Among these people include two-time EVO champion "Itazan" Itabashi Zangief, SF top-player Dogura, and more!
