Sonic Galactic, a fan-made game developed by Starteam, evokes the spirit of Sonic Mania, captivating players with its pixel art and classic Sonic gameplay. This homage to the franchise's 25th-anniversary celebration delivers a retro experience reminiscent of the Genesis era, but with a modern twist.
The game's active development, spanning at least four years, culminated in a second demo release in early 2025. This demo showcases not only the classic Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles, but also introduces two new playable characters: Fang the Sniper (from Sonic Triple Trouble) and Tunnel the Mole (a character originating from Sonic Frontiers). Each character boasts unique level paths, adding significant replayability.
Inspired by the acclaimed Sonic Mania, Sonic Galactic's level design and special stages share a similar aesthetic. The special stages, set in 3D environments, maintain the classic ring-collecting challenge within a time limit. The second demo provides approximately one hour of gameplay focusing on Sonic's levels, with shorter stages for the other characters, resulting in a total playtime of around two hours. This makes it a substantial offering for fans eager for more classic Sonic action.
The game's development is particularly noteworthy given the absence of a true Sonic Mania sequel. While Sonic Superstars offered a 2D successor with updated graphics, Sonic Galactic caters to the enduring appeal of the original pixel art style. It successfully captures the essence of a hypothetical 32-bit Sonic game, potentially envisioning what a Sega Saturn release might have been like. This dedication to retro aesthetics, combined with fresh characters and level design, makes Sonic Galactic a compelling experience for both nostalgic fans and newcomers alike.
