There's a New Game of Thrones Illustrated Edition Coming in November, but Still No Winds of Winter

by Daniel Mar 28,2025

George R.R. Martin recently updated his blog with exciting news for fans of A Song of Ice and Fire, though it wasn't about the long-awaited *The Winds of Winter*. Instead, he unveiled the cover for the next illustrated edition, *A Feast for Crows*, featuring stunning artwork by Jeffrey R. McDonald. This marks the fourth book in the series to receive such a special treatment, continuing the tradition of beautifully illustrated editions that fans have come to cherish.

*A Feast for Crows: The Illustrated Edition* is scheduled to hit the shelves on November 4, 2025. You can secure your copy by preordering from popular retailers such as Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Target, among others.

This announcement is particularly exciting for collectors of the illustrated editions, as it's been five years since the release of the illustrated *A Storm of Swords* in November 2020. In addition to the captivating illustrations, this new edition will include a foreword by Joe Abercrombie. Martin has promised to share some of the interior illustrations later this spring, building anticipation for the book's release.

For those new to the series or looking to complete their collection, the first three illustrated editions of A Song of Ice and Fire are already available:

What About The Winds of Winter?

For those eagerly awaiting *The Winds of Winter*, the wait might continue for some time. The last update from Martin on this front came from an interview in December 2024, where he expressed concerns about possibly never completing the book in his lifetime. This followed his November 2023 update, where he revealed having written 1,100 pages so far.

While the lack of progress on *The Winds of Winter* is disappointing for fans who've waited nearly 14 years, there remains hope that the series might be completed by someone else. With the fourth illustrated edition now on its way, it seems likely that the first five special editions will be finished before *The Winds of Winter* sees the light of day.
