Thunderbolts Trailer Debate: Taskmaster's Absence in Key Scene Sparks Discussion

by Samuel May 20,2025

A new teaser for Thunderbolts has sparked a heated debate among fans regarding the fate of Taskmaster, especially after the character's noticeable absence from a key scene that was initially included in the September 2024 trailer. The original trailer depicted Taskmaster standing between Ghost and U.S. Agent in the Watchtower scene, but the latest teaser omits Taskmaster entirely, leaving fans puzzled and theorizing about what might have happened.

This change comes amidst other concerning signs for Taskmaster's future, as Olga Kurylenko, who plays the character, was notably absent from the recently announced cast of Avengers: Doomsday, while other Thunderbolts characters were included. This has led some MCU enthusiasts to speculate that Taskmaster may meet a grim fate in Thunderbolts.

The sudden removal of Taskmaster from the scene has prompted a flurry of theories. Some fans suggest Marvel might be engaging in a double-bluff, aiming to mislead audiences about the character's fate. Others speculate that the slight repositioning of characters in the scene could indicate that Sentry, known for his ability to 'delete' people, might have already killed or removed Taskmaster at that moment, with the rest of the Thunderbolts yet to notice.

On Reddit, user Matapple13 commented, "Marvel pretty much just sealed the fate of this character in the movie. Yesterday they announced Sebastian Stan, Florence Pugh, Wyatt Russell, David Harbour, Hannah John-Kamen, and Lewis Pullman in the Avengers: Doomsday cast, but Olga Kurylenko (Taskmaster's actress) was blatantly absent, and now, Marvel posts this..." Meanwhile, user puckallday offered a different perspective, saying, "The amount of people saying she’s dying and Marvel seemingly leaning into that by barely showing her make me think there's a reveal there with her in the movie and that she lives."

The new teaser opens with Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, played by Julia Louis-Dreyfus, describing Sentry as "stronger than all of the Avengers rolled into one," hinting at his formidable power that could explain Taskmaster's disappearance. Whether Taskmaster was killed, deleted, or sent to another dimension remains a mystery.

The MCU has been abuzz with activity following an eventful week, including discussions on whether the Avengers: Doomsday cast announcement has inadvertently spoiled Thunderbolts. Additionally, Marvel and Robert Downey Jr. have hinted that more Avengers: Doomsday cast reveals are on the horizon, offering a glimmer of hope for Taskmaster's future.

Fans won't have to wait long for answers. Thunderbolts is set to premiere in May 2025, followed by the TV show Ironheart in June, and Phase 6 will kick off with The Fantastic Four: First Steps in July. Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled for release on May 1, 2026, with Secret Wars following in May 2027.
