Joseph Kosinski, renowned for his work on Top Gun: Maverick and Tron: Legacy, is reportedly set to direct a new Miami Vice movie for Universal, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The screenplay will be penned by Dan Gilroy, known for his work on Nightcrawler, who will be building upon an initial draft from Top Gun: Maverick screenwriter Eric Warren Singer. Gilroy has recently been occupied with writing multiple episodes of the Star Wars series Andor, which was created by his brother, Tony Gilroy.

Miami Vice is a landmark NBC police series created by Anthony Yerkovich and produced by Michael Mann. The series, which aired for five seasons from 1984 to 1989, starred Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas as the iconic Miami detectives Crockett and Tubbs. It is celebrated for revolutionizing television with its unique visual style, sound, and storytelling.

The television show was previously adapted into a feature film in 2006, directed by Michael Mann and featuring Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell in the lead roles.

While further details about the upcoming Miami Vice movie are currently sparse, it's clear that this project will not be the next on Kosinski's directorial slate, as he is set to release F1 in June. This timeline should afford Kosinski ample opportunity to prepare and perhaps even select the perfect Ferrari for the film, adding to the iconic flair that Miami Vice is known for.
