Splash Damage Scraps Transformers: Reactivate After Lengthy Development

Splash Damage has officially canceled its Transformers: Reactivate project after a protracted and troubled development cycle. Revealed at The Game Awards 2022, Transformers: Reactivate was envisioned as a 1-4 player online game featuring Autobots and Decepticons uniting against a new alien threat. Despite the initial excitement, the project remained largely silent, with only a few leaks and early toy releases offering glimpses of potential characters like Ironhide, Hot Rod, Starscream, and Soundwave (along with rumored appearances from Beast Wars characters).

The studio's announcement on Twitter cited the difficult decision to halt development, acknowledging potential staff layoffs due to redundancies. Splash Damage expressed gratitude to the development team and Hasbro for their contributions and support. Fan reaction has been mixed, with some expressing disappointment, while others anticipated the cancellation given the lack of updates since the 2022 trailer.

The studio's focus now shifts to "Project Astrid," a AAA open-world survival game built with Unreal Engine 5, a project announced in March 2023 in collaboration with streamers Shroud and Sacriel. This pivot, however, comes at the cost of job losses within the team formerly working on Transformers: Reactivate. The cancellation leaves Transformers fans still awaiting a high-quality, AAA game based on the popular franchise.

Key Points:

  • Transformers: Reactivate canceled.
  • Potential layoffs at Splash Damage.
  • Studio now concentrating on Unreal Engine 5 open-world survival game ("Project Astrid").
