In *NieR: Automata*, Small Swords are known for their rapid attack speed and a compact hitbox directly in front of the user. These weapons serve as an excellent choice for tackling the diverse enemy types you'll encounter throughout the game. Upgrading these weapons can extend their usefulness, but the game also offers an array of powerful weapons that can be discovered and enhanced, with the Type-40 series standing out as particularly potent. The Type-40 Sword, in particular, is a unique find that requires completing specific side quests to obtain.

How To Get The Type-40 Sword In NieR: Automata

To acquire the Type-40 Sword, you must complete the side quest "Find A Present," which is the final quest in a series linked to Operator 6O. Here's how to unlock this quest and secure the sword:

After defeating Adam and Eve at the conclusion of Chapter 5, you'll receive a call from Operator 6O, initiating the side quest "Investigating Communications." This quest is easily missed, so be sure to complete it immediately.
Continue the main storyline through Chapter 6, which involves the events of the Forest Castle, and into Chapter 7.
After conversing with Pascal about A2 in Chapter 7, explore the city ruins until you receive another call from Operator 6O, prompting you to check your inbox at an access point to start the quest "Terminal Repairs."
As you head back to the Resistance Camp in Chapter 7, you'll receive a final call from Operator 6O discussing flowers and sending you another message in your inbox.
Access the message to begin the "Find a Present" quest.
Upon completing "Find a Present," the Type-40 Sword will be delivered to your inbox as a reward.

At its initial level, the Type-40 Sword features a 5-hit combo for light attacks and a 3-hit combo for heavy attacks. Upgrading it to level 4 expands the light attack combo to 7 hits and enhances its stunning capability, requiring Titanium Alloy for each upgrade level.
