"Piston Peak National Park Unveiled at Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom in Historic Expansion"

by Nicholas Jun 15,2025

Walt Disney World has officially revealed that its upcoming *Cars*-themed land at Magic Kingdom will be named **Piston Peak National Park**, a bold addition that's part of what Disney describes as the *"largest expansion in the history of Magic Kingdom."* This exciting development was detailed on the Disney Parks Blog, with construction set to begin this summer. As a result, the Rivers of America, Tom Sawyer Island, and the Liberty Square Riverboat will close starting July 7.

So, what can guests expect from this immersive new environment? According to Disney, Piston Peak is designed to feel like an expansive, awe-inspiring wilderness featuring towering trees, snowcapped mountains, dramatic waterfalls, rushing rivers, and powerful geysers. While fictional, the setting draws inspiration from the real-world Rocky Mountain region and pays homage to the American Frontier and its iconic national parks.

As a tribute to the *Cars* franchise, the area will feature recognizable locations such as a visitor lodge, Ranger HQ, and themed trails. The design also incorporates a unique architectural style known as "Parkitecture"—a method pioneered by the National Park Service aimed at blending man-made structures seamlessly into the natural landscape.

To enhance immersion, Imagineers have strategically placed dense foliage to naturally separate Piston Peak from the rest of Frontierland and Liberty Square. Additionally, rugged mountain peaks will rise majestically along a tranquil waterway opposite Grizzly Hall, while soaring geysers—originating from Big Thunder Mountain Railroad—will extend into the off-road rally trails within the park.

New Cars Attractions Coming to Magic Kingdom

This new Cars-themed expansion was first announced during D23 2024, where it was confirmed that the land would include two brand-new attractions. The first offers a thrilling rally race through the mountainous terrain, described by Disney as an adventure where guests “take on wild terrain as you race across the landscape climbing mountain trails, dodging geysers, and — Mater's favorite — splashing through mudholes.” The second attraction promises family-friendly fun and is especially tailored for younger fans.

At SXSW 2025, Disney Parks offered a sneak peek at the custom ride vehicles being developed for the rally race experience. These vehicles required a fresh approach to ride engineering, specifically designed to evoke a distinct sensation when ridden. Continuing the *Cars* theme, each vehicle features its own unique personality, name, and number—adding another layer of storytelling to the attraction.

A Larger Vision for Magic Kingdom

Piston Peak National Park represents just one piece of Magic Kingdom’s broader transformation. In the future, the park will welcome its very first land inspired by Disney Villains, further expanding the storytelling possibilities across the resort.

In the near term, guests can look forward to the debut of the all-new **Disney Starlight** nighttime parade on July 20, part of Disney World’s Cool Kid Summer celebration. Additionally, later this year, a Pirates of the Caribbean-inspired dining experience called **The Beak and Barrel** will open its doors, offering yet another reason to visit the ever-evolving Magic Kingdom.
