Controller-Enhanced PC Games Dominate Gameplay Experience

PC gaming is largely synonymous with keyboard and mouse controls, particularly for genres like first-person shooters and strategy games that benefit from their precision. However, some PC games are surprisingly better suited to controllers. Reflex-based movement and fast-paced melee combat often lend themselves well to gamepad controls, mirroring how certain genres, especially those originating on consoles, feel more natural on them.

While most PC releases strive for robust keyboard and mouse support, a number of titles truly excel with a controller. The recent influx of console ports to PC often prioritizes controller input, although keyboard and mouse options are usually included. Let's examine some examples.

Updated January 7, 2025: Late 2024 saw several high-profile releases, including Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, Infinity Nikki, Marvel Rivals, Path of Exile 2, and Delta Force. While these generally perform well with keyboard and mouse, and arguably better than with a controller, Legacy of Kain Soul Reaver 1&2 Remastered might offer a slightly enhanced experience with a gamepad, though the difference is minimal.

Several upcoming PC games show promise for superior controller play:

  • Freedom Wars Remastered: A PS Vita port following the Monster Hunter formula, suggesting controller compatibility.
  • Tales of Graces f Remastered: The Tales series consistently benefits from gamepad use, and this remaster is likely no exception.
  • Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth: Given the controller-centric nature of its predecessor's PC port, a similar experience is anticipated.
  • Marvel's Spider-Man 2: As a PS5 port, controller input is likely prioritized, though keyboard and mouse should still be functional.

A 2024 Soulslike title has also been added to this list. See below for details.
