Elden Ring Nightreign is still in its early stages, yet players have already encountered their greatest obstacle. Surprisingly, it's not one of FromSoftware's notoriously difficult bosses—it's the challenge of assembling a squad.
The expansion plunges players into Limveld's ever-changing landscapes, where they must survive alone or in three-person teams. Unlike the base game, duo co-op isn't available. Our earlier coverage highlighted Nightreign's mixed Steam reviews, with players voicing disappointment over missing two-player options and voice chat functionality.
Solo play presents an exceptionally steep challenge. As noted in IGN's Elden Ring Nightreign review: "Let's address the crucial disclaimer upfront—unless you're a veteran Elden Ring player who deliberately seeks additional challenges beyond the base game's difficulty, Nightreign's solo mode may disappoint. While technically available, the unbalanced solo experience will likely receive balancing patches shortly after launch. This assessment comes from someone deeply immersed in Soulsborne titles."
Solo players consequently face random matchmaking, which creates coordination issues during crucial boss encounters.
The community has responded by organizing through forums. The Elden Ring subreddit currently overflowed with duo teams seeking third members (with many humorously embracing the situation).

"Finding even one reliable teammate seems impossible, let alone two," commented redditor trickponies. "Is the game viable solo?"
While Nightreign includes matchmaking for trio play, some players argue that relying on random teammates diminishes the experience.
"This subreddit's gameplay clips have taught me to distrust randoms with anything important," joked one player. "No offense—I'd rather keep my blood pressure stable."
Discord servers and other platforms now buzz with players forming teams. Despite launching less than 24 hours ago, team coordination has already emerged as a major community hurdle.

Some longtime fans admit they're skipping Nightreign entirely due to the multiplayer requirement.
"As disappointing as it sounds, I'll pass since none of my friends play Elden Ring and solo isn't viable," shared Twinkie454.
The community remains hopeful for future solo balance adjustments. "We'll see how FromSoftware addresses this—patience might pay off," suggested one optimistic player.
Meanwhile, veterans extend helping hands. "New best friend alert!" joked one commenter. "Buy Nightreign—I'll squad up after work tomorrow!"
Despite these concerns, Nightreign shattered Steam records with 313,593 peak concurrent players—securing its place among Valve's top-played titles.
FromSoftware hints at possible duo support updates. In IGN's interview with director Junya Ishizaki, he acknowledged overlooking two-player co-op during development while focusing on the three-player experience.
"We prioritized balancing for trio gameplay as Nightreign's core design," Ishizaki explained. "While we considered solo play extensively, we unintentionally neglected duo options—something we're evaluating for post-launch updates."
