Featured Games: 'Ace Attorney Investigations Collection' Review and Latest Releases

by Patrick Feb 07,2025

Hello fellow gamers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Roundup for September 4th, 2024! Summer's over, but let's cherish those warm memories. This week brings a bounty of reviews, fresh releases, and some tempting sales. Let's dive in!

Reviews & Mini-Views

Ace Attorney Investigations Collection ($39.99)

The Switch continues to offer second chances at classic games. Following the successful releases of Trials of Mana, Live A Live, and the original Fire Emblem, we now have the Ace Attorney Investigations Collection, featuring Miles Edgeworth's two adventures. This collection cleverly builds upon previous storylines, particularly in the second game, which significantly enhances the first. Finally experiencing the second game in English is a treat.

The Investigations games offer a fresh perspective from the prosecution's standpoint. While the core mechanics remain similar—searching for clues, questioning witnesses, solving cases—the unique presentation and Edgeworth's personality make for a compelling experience. The pacing can feel uneven at times, but fans of the main series will find much to enjoy. If the first game feels slow, persevere—the second is far superior.

Bonus features are generous, including an art and music gallery, a story mode for relaxed playthroughs, and the option to switch between original and updated graphics/soundtracks. A handy dialog history feature is also included.

The Ace Attorney Investigations Collection provides a fantastic dual experience. The official localization of the second game is a major win, and the extra features elevate the package. With this release, nearly every Ace Attorney title (excluding the Professor Layton crossover) is now available on Switch. If you've enjoyed previous entries, this is a must-have.

SwitchArcade Score: 4.5/5

Gimmick! 2 ($24.99)

A sequel to Gimmick! is a surprising yet welcome development. Developed by Bitwave Games, this faithful sequel stays true to the original's challenging physics-based platforming. Six lengthy levels will test your skills, but an easier mode is available for those seeking a less demanding experience.

The core gameplay remains familiar, with Yumetaro's star serving as a versatile tool. Collectibles add replay value, unlocking customization options. While not excessively long, the game is undeniably difficult. Generous checkpoints mitigate frustration, and the charming visuals and music enhance the experience.

Gimmick! 2 is a remarkable follow-up, successfully building upon the original without losing its unique identity. Fans of the first game will be delighted, and challenging platformer enthusiasts should definitely check it out. However, those seeking a casual experience should be warned—it's as tough as its predecessor.

SwitchArcade Score: 4.5/5

Valfaris: Mecha Therion ($19.99)

Valfaris: Mecha Therion boldly shifts from the original's action-platforming to a shoot 'em up style. While the Switch's hardware may struggle at times, the intense action, soundtrack, and visuals still deliver a fun experience.

The weapon system introduces a satisfying juggling act: a primary gun, a melee weapon for energy regeneration, and a rotating third weapon. Mastering the rhythm of weapon management and dodging is key.

While different from its predecessor, Mecha Therion maintains the original's distinct atmosphere. Performance may be better on other platforms, but the Switch version is still enjoyable.

SwitchArcade Score: 4/5

Umamusume: Pretty Derby – Party Dash ($44.99)

A licensed game, naturally appealing to fans of the source material. Umamusume: Pretty Derby – Party Dash delivers ample fan service, with strong writing and meta-systems rewarding dedicated players. However, the limited number of repetitive mini-games might not appeal to non-fans.

Even for fans, the game's focus might feel misplaced. While the presentation is excellent, the lack of depth limits its appeal beyond the dedicated fanbase.

SwitchArcade Score: 3/5

Sunsoft is Back! Retro Game Selection ($9.99)

This collection showcases Sunsoft's lesser-known 8-bit titles. It includes Firework Thrower Kantaro’s 53 Stations of the Tokaido, Ripple Island, and The Wing of Madoola. All three games are fully localized, a significant achievement. The package includes save states, rewind, display options, and art galleries.

The games themselves offer a varied experience. 53 Stations is challenging, Ripple Island is a solid adventure, and The Wing of Madoola is ambitious but uneven. While not top-tier NES games, they offer charm and historical significance.

Sunsoft fans and retro game enthusiasts will appreciate this collection. The careful handling and localization make this a worthwhile purchase.
