PlayStation enthusiasts can breathe a sigh of relief—FF7 Remake Part 3 is set to grace the PS5. In an interview with 4Gamer on January 23, 2025, Kitase and Hamaguchi dispelled any doubts about the platform, stating, "No, you can rest assured about the next one (FF7 Remake Part 3)." This assurance comes amidst concerns over the release history of FF7 Remake (PS4) and FF7 Rebirth (PS5).

As the PS5 is currently mid-way through its lifecycle, there's speculation that the FF7 Remake trilogy might eventually make its way to the next PlayStation console, the PS6. However, details about the PS6 remain scarce.

FF7 Remake Part 3 Release Date

While Square Enix has kept the release date of FF7 Remake Part 3 under wraps, development has been progressing smoothly. The team began working on the third installment concurrently with Part 2, with full production kicking into high gear post the February 2024 release of FF7 Rebirth. Leveraging assets from the previous games and a completed story draft, the wait for the final chapter might not be as long as fans fear.

In a recent update to Famitsu on January 23, 2025, Hamaguchi shared, "It’s going very well. We started working on the third game right after FFVII Rebirth ended, and we have a build that will confirm what we should aim for as a game by the end of 2024. We can already see the direction of where we will land, so we have been working towards that goal since the beginning of this year. We are progressing without any delay from the schedule we planned when we launched the remake project, so we hope you will look forward to it."

Kitase also expressed satisfaction with the story's conclusion, stating, "At least I'm very satisfied with it, so I'm sure it will be a conclusion that will satisfy the fans as well."

FF7 Remake Part 3 Will Allegedly Be a Timed Exclusive Game

Although the exact release date remains undisclosed, a report from the Washington Post on March 6, 2024, revealed that PlayStation secured timed exclusivity for the FF7 Remake trilogy. This means that FF7 Remake Part 3 will initially be available only on PS5 for a certain period.

Following the pattern of its predecessors, FF7 Remake (2020) was a PS4 exclusive for a year before hitting PC platforms via Epic Games Store and Steam. FF7 Remake Intergrade, an enhanced version of the first game, enjoyed six months of PS5 exclusivity before its PC release. FF7 Rebirth followed suit, with its PC version launching on January 23, 2025, after its initial PS5 release in February 2024. It's likely that FF7 Remake Part 3 will follow this trend, launching exclusively on PS5 before eventually reaching other platforms.

Square Enix Multi-Platform Strategy Amidst Declining Sales

Despite the success of the FF7 Remake series, Square Enix reported a decline in HD title sales in their financial results on March 31, 2024. Titles like FF16, Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince, and FF7 Rebirth contributed to this trend. The company cited increased development costs, advertising expenses, and higher content valuation losses as reasons for the operating losses.

In response, Square Enix is shifting towards a multi-platform strategy, aiming to release games on Nintendo platforms, PlayStation, Xbox, and PCs. This move is intended to boost sales and reach a broader audience. As a result, more of Square Enix's HD titles may soon be available on Xbox, Switch 2, and other platforms, despite their longstanding partnership with PlayStation.
