Helldivers 2 Movie: Developers Shouldn't Have Final Say

by Eric May 01,2025

At the tech-centric CES 2025, Sony surprised attendees with several exciting movie and TV show announcements, including the confirmation of an official Helldivers 2 film in development. This project marks a collaboration between Sony Productions and Sony Pictures, although specific details remain scarce. Asad Qizilbash, head of PlayStation Productions, shared the news on-stage at CES, stating, "Looking ahead as to what might come next, I'm excited to announce we are working with Sony Pictures on developing a film adaptation of our amazingly popular PlayStation game Helldivers 2."

Helldivers 2, crafted by developer Arrowhead, draws heavy inspiration from the cult classic sci-fi satire, Starship Troopers. The game follows future soldiers as they strive to protect a fascist Super Earth regime against alien threats, including robots known as Automatons and bugs called Terminids, all while advocating for "Managed Democracy."

The announcement has sparked numerous questions among fans, though both Sony and Arrowhead have yet to provide detailed answers. However, Arrowhead's CCO, Johan Pilestedt, responded to a query on X/Twitter about the developer's involvement in the film's production to ensure its fidelity to the games. Pilestedt admitted to evading the question but confirmed that Arrowhead would have some input, albeit not creative control. He elaborated, "I've been dodging this question. The short answer is yes. The long answer is that we'll see. We are not Hollywood people, and we don't know what it takes to make a movie. And therefore we don't, and shouldn't, have final say."

Choosing Helldivers 2 for a movie adaptation might seem unusual, especially with Starship Troopers already existing in the same genre. It will be fascinating to observe how Sony approaches this adaptation and which creative minds they enlist. Given the project's early stages, further details may not emerge for quite some time.

Helldivers 2 has proven to be a phenomenal success, becoming the fastest-selling PlayStation Studios game ever, with an impressive 12 million copies sold within just 12 weeks. The game has seen a resurgence thanks to the highly anticipated Illuminate update, which introduces a third faction for players to battle against.

During Sony's CES 2025 press conference, additional adaptations were announced, including a movie adaptation of Guerrilla's Horizon Zero Dawn and an anime adaptation of Sucker Punch's Ghost of Tsushima. Sony's commitment to adapting its video games into various media formats is evident, with Season 2 of the acclaimed HBO series The Last of Us set to premiere in April.
