Kojima Aims to Direct Film After Completing PlayStation Game Physint in 5-6 Years

Hideo Kojima's much-anticipated project, Physint, a spiritual successor to his iconic Metal Gear series, is still a distant dream, slated for release in "another five or six years," according to the visionary himself. In a recent interview with Le Film Francais, Kojima shared insights into his current endeavors and future ambitions, highlighting that his dream of directing a movie is currently on pause until he completes his first "action espionage" game since his high-profile departure from Konami in 2015.

Kojima elaborated on the numerous offers he has received since going independent, expressing his commitment to his current projects. "Besides Death Stranding 2, there's also Physint in development. That will take me another five or six years," he stated, as translated by ResetEra member Red Kong XIX. Despite his eagerness to explore cinema, Kojima recognizes the importance of age, humorously noting, "I grew up with cinema. Directing would be, in a way, a tribute to it. Also, I'm getting older, and I'd prefer to do it while I'm still young!"

Physint was first announced by PlayStation Studios boss Herman Hulst in January 2024, though details have been scarce since. Initially hinting that Physint might blend elements of both gaming and cinema, Kojima later clarified on X/Twitter that the project aims to push the boundaries of 'Digital Entertainment' to a level akin to a 'movie,' emphasizing its next-level approach to look, story, theme, cast, acting, fashion, and sound.

Amidst his busy schedule, Kojima is juggling multiple projects. Alongside Physint, he is working on Death Stranding 2 and OD, a new IP in collaboration with Xbox Game Studios, featuring actress Hunter Schafer and filmmaker Jordan Peele. Additionally, he is involved in A24's film adaptation of the original Death Stranding.

Death Stranding 2: On The Beach is set to hit the shelves on June 26, with actor Norman Reedus, who stars in the franchise, teasing his potential role in the upcoming film adaptation, confidently stating in an IGN interview that he would "of course" play himself in the movie.

In a fascinating twist, Kojima recently disclosed a trove of discarded game ideas, including a concept for a 'Forgetting Game' where the protagonist loses crucial information and abilities if players take too long a break. In a touching gesture towards the future of his studio, Kojima revealed he left his staff a USB stick filled with game ideas to be explored after his passing.
