Exciting news for RPG fans: Suikoden is making a comeback, albeit in a different format. Konami and MYTHRIL have unveiled Suikoden STAR LEAP, a new mobile RPG set to launch for Android and iOS. This free-to-play game is expected to hit the app stores later this year, although an exact release date is yet to be announced.
For those unfamiliar, the Suikoden series has been captivating gamers since its debut in 1995. Developed and published by Konami, and created by Yoshitaka Murayama, the series draws inspiration from the classical Chinese novel, Water Margin, known as Suikoden in Japanese. Over the years, it has woven a rich tapestry of political intrigue, mystical True Runes, and the iconic 108 Stars of Destiny. With 11 entries, including spin-offs, the last release was in 2012. Instead of a direct sequel or a full revival, Konami is introducing Suikoden STAR LEAP as a mobile experience.
Suikoden STAR LEAP introduces a fresh cast of characters while maintaining the tradition of assembling 108 heroes. The game embraces the series’ classic feel with its pixel art style, which you can see in the teaser trailer below.
The narrative centers around the Rune of Change, one of the 27 True Runes that have shaped the world. The protagonist, Hou, the son of the village chief, embarks on his journey after a successful hunt is overshadowed by a devastating attack on his village. Accompanied by Hisui, a servant with a mysterious emotional suppression, Shirin, his childhood friend driven by a strong sense of justice, and Shapur, a former general turned butler, Hou sets out to restore peace.
While the announcement of Suikoden STAR LEAP has stirred excitement, it has also sparked mixed feelings among the Suikoden fanbase. Many have been eagerly awaiting a traditional sequel, and the introduction of a gacha-based mobile game has left some fans uncertain. The full impact of this new direction will become clearer upon the game's release. In the meantime, keep an eye on the official website for the latest updates.
